Figuring out this blog thing

So the trouble with writing is that you actually have to write. I started this site with good intentions and then wrote nothing…but I am planning on changing that, starting with this post.

I recently came across a Buzzfeed video about married people who had been married so long, they had never used a dating app. Without revealing too much about my age, I would definitely fall into that category. Back when I got married (12 years ago), there was a certain stigma about people who had profiles on dating sites. Mostly, we created profiles for our single friends as jokes. If I suddenly found myself single today, I would imagine that one of the first things I would do is sign up for Tinder.

Dating as a Video Game

The various apps available for “dating” kind-of make the whole thing seem like a video game, and it looks like fun. Swipe and see if you are a match, then see how strong your text game is. Get notifications all day on your phone that people are interested in you, check out pictures of hot women, and imagine what it would be like if you actually met up. I have to imagine, however, that just like any of my other favorite video games, I would be immensely un-productive and get nothing done as I waited for my inbox to fill up and flirt with people.

Would it hook me up with my wife?

From what I understand, these apps and sites use complex algorithms to match people based on their stated types and interests. I often wonder, if my wife and I both created profiles, would the system match us, or does math say that we are not the right couple for each other? More importantly, what would that mean if we weren’t put together by the matrix.

Either way, watch the video.

Meet up, hook up, move on. It’s got to be that simple right? Or maybe my married brain only imagines that outside of marital bliss, there is this world of debauchery where sex actually is casual and porn-like, and being single is just like the movies.
